BACK to the intro page

It would only be two of the four who paired up at each clutch, somewhere around the middle of the hatching. With a mess of shells already broken and even a number of unpaired dragons wandering the sands, one particular blue came tromping quickly up to Pho. He promptly did a nosedive into the soft, hot sand. Causing him to sneeze, and Pho to laugh brightly.

It isn't funny! It stings! She cleaned off the dragon's muzzle with care, giggling the whole time, and realized that she did know his name: **.

"This is *," she said proudly to the recordskeeper, who nodded and indicated the meat bowls that she knew she'd be seeing more of for the foreseeable future.

()

Meanwhile, just shortly after Pho's impression, another blue was trying to get past Yaralny. He almost intercepted the hissing hatchling, but was caught short by a mind voice, clear and pure.

I'm here, rider-mine, behind you. Yaralny, now Y'ral, turned to see a gorgeous deep brown hatchling sitting behind him, eyes glimmering yellow and blue. My silly rider, trying to impress a blue.

Y'ral chuckled, and stroked his brown dragon's muzzle gently as ** insisted he do. "I know that would never have worked, **, I'm glad you interrupted me."

"That girl and her green certainly held up the line," Pho patted * shoulder as they flew over the fields. They were quick to the skies, in weyrling training, Pho was starting to lose weight and gain muscle, and was starting to get noticed by other boys in the Weyr. She remained aloof from their advances, claiming of course first and foremost, she was a rider and a young one at that! She and her dragon couldn't afford to get distracted by romance or even a bit of a fling!

It was more because she and Y'ral would soon become Weyrmates, even with the ranks of their dragons both being males. Y'ral found it almost impossible to keep from gawking at certain women in the Weyr, but a laughing nudge from Pho while they worked, or a well-placed comment from someone about how his 'girlfriend' would notice his mouth on the ground like that... He turned his attentions back to the flight instructions.

They were now learning how to master quick turns and abrupt changes in altitude, and if anything, Y'ral's training with leather gave him a good solid edge when they went to harness in. He was given the task of inspecting the gear on flight days, and when he discovered something weakened or about to break he was able to directly address it with the rider. So it wasn't his fault if anyone fell to their gristly death because of faulty harness leathers, at least - he knew they would listen after that first story the Weyrling master told...

***

Neither Pho nor Y'ral thought twice about learning how to send their dragon between, since they did it naturally, why ought they not be able to do it easily and properly? But some folks fought it, some people were just that uncomfortable between that they though they'd be lost forever. To this pair, it was as simple as recalling the colorful pattern on a rooftop, or the smell of the cherry trees in blossom at Ablan. They knew the turns of the seasons would affect things, and carefully made sure that they were recalling the correct season.

The other thing they had going for them, was that by now both Lainra and Kiryn had Impressed! The Den was the right choice after all, for this group. They could all chat and have something far more important in common with each other now, they were dragon riders!

Pho and Y'ral would wait, one more year or so, until the youngest of their dragons were old enough to head between - and they would return to Dragonhope! Continuing their studies and protecting their home guilds was now most certainly creeping back into all of them. It'd been more than a year, they were itchy to return home. Their return would be to the weyr, not their guild halls, but triumphant they would be.

I am itchy anyway, bespoke *.

You are always itchy, * chided the smaller blue.

** note they are at Dragonhope, not Ablan, part of the Weyr wings updating 3.10.26 removed dragons
