Powers |
Wane's powers stem from two sources, innate bred mutations on the dna level, and exposure to alien energies. Given that his parents are workers at Skin-side Black Mesa, they were both definitely exposed to 'whatever it is' in their respective departments. Perhaps it's Xenian energies, perhaps it's just raw toxic radiation, but both of his parents also exhibit bits and pieces of superhuman behaviors and abilities, so it's reasonable to assume he would have inherited these anyway. They might have been latent if he himself hadn't gone on a trip through the facility while several experiments were going on. But he did, and now they're very much active powers. They can be dampened or mitigated by technological or psionic means, but not removed as they are part of his DNA. Notably the metal affected by his powers is more easily used by other people with similar abilities as well as magnetic or electrical powers, and this synergizes amazingly well.
Psychometry - this power is essentially always active, which is why he wears gloves at all times. He must be able to touch the item and it must be at least partially made of metal, though it can be heavily buried within a wall, behind a layer of insulation or plastic, or mixed with other substances such as rock or synthetics. If there's any elemental metal, he is able to sense the full object's potential and use, as well as details about its prior functions, and if within about a week, who has touched it before him. He can detect historical evidence about the device, but only back as far as a year, and if he's touched the item before, he can only sense recent activities, it won't tell him the same story over and over. He's excellent wit running his hand across a wall where he needs to find the metal fittings, pipes, conduit, and the like, and when needed he can re-check those areas for leaks, damage, and wear. Even if he must be touching the area or item, he can extend his perception through the metals, up to 200 meters away if it's either contiguous or within a foot or so between parts - so a wall which is only made with small amounts of metal for hinges and supports, he could see through if the studs are around 1 foot apart, but not if they are wider. However most walls have conduit and piping, wires, and such!
Metal Manipulation - with proximity under 4 meters and concentration (light) he can isolate metal pieces, and clear them of impurities such as rust, or draw ore out of loose grit or particles. He can fix larger pieces of broken or worn metals, bending a pipe back into shape after bursting, or a vehicle's frame after an accident. This requires more metal content than anything else, though doesn't have to be completely pure, he will only be able to easily manipulate the metal itself, so hopefully any other particles are going along for the ride. If he's already using his Psychometry to sense a broken pipe or frayed wire in a wall, he doesn't even need to concentrate to fix it. But if he's presented with something he hasn't been in contact with before, he does have to filter through its history before working on it, and don't you dare interrupt while he's talking to the toaster. Depending on the size of the item and the amount of metal in it, he can push out dents and dings, or reshape a piece of metal around 25 pounds per ten minutes of uninterrupted concentration. While he can continue to work as long as he's uninterrupted, he will be exhausted and must sleep or at least rest for at least 4 hours after a 2 hour period of work.
Metal Echolocation - he can sense and sense through specific items, usually ones that he's shaped before, that he places around a location. Those little camera lenses in each classroom and around the halls? Those aren't all just for official security. Sometimes he's gone in after hours and reshaped the fittings around the domes, or the base of the cameras, to be 'his'. They become view points and location markers, and as he walks through the campus or any location he's deposited a 1/2-pound item he's shaped, he can sense things in a 4 meter sphere around that item. Not in great detail, but how many people are near, the temperature around it, and to a small degree any loud or repetitive noises such as banging or marching feet. He's working out ways to do this through much smaller items, such as pinballs, which are around 1" and 3 ounces. |

Mechanical Engineering +5 With two engineer parents and a lifetime of exposure to machinery, vehicles, and tools, it's no wonder that Wane is as predisposed to wanting to be a mechanic himself. Even if the devices or parts speak to him with a touch, he also picks up user manuals, repair guides, and textbooks about them all the time. Just, all the time. He's always either fixing something, examining a piece, or reading about one! It isn't just cars and toasters, it's weapons and powered doors and tools and everything else that has to do with creating, repairing, assembling, or working with any metal based item. He can design a new tool that might allow him to reach a distant piece of metal sitting just too far for his powers to reach on a wooden construction, or disassemble a toaster and turn it into a howitzer with enough spare parts. At a glance, he knows whether a machine is going to be functional, and also how it might be moved from one location to another if it's very large
Drive, Fly, Tunnel, Teleport It's All The Same To Him +3 He can pilot a helicopter or use a forklift with the same casual grace, he's one of those guys on a worksite that can set out a tea party with said forklift and a backhoe for pouring. He's not much for speed - he prefers solid machinery like tanks and tunneling devices over crotch rockets and sports cars, but he can certainly drive any of those with confidence. This may be due to his proximity to the parts: they will obey him whether he's paying attention to the wheel or pushing the brakes or not, though he does enjoy having both hands on a wheel and full command over the stickshift. In any team or outing, literally no one else will try horning in on him being the driver of a vehicle. He's had to be asked to let others have their turn, so someone has to dangle shinies for him to work on, so he doesn't just stand there cringing and yelling at them as they screw up... He can create and use more exotic devices such as hand-held portal devices and larger scale material teleporters, but doesn't trust them unless he's actually built them, no mom even that Lambda teleporter at work, gonna go look at the whole thing can I reach the reactor to see if the power is fully connected? no? then I'm not going through it... While he can and does work on watercraft he is not particularly enamored of boats or subs, something something metal sinks something... |

Precise Engineer Script +3 An expert with drawing up schematics, reading and producing blueprints, and oh he loves calligraphy?! Well, in as much as a font can be drawn precisely and made clear, his handwriting and block printing are positively flawless. He has an artistic eye, not just an engineer's, so he can also forge signatures rather well. There might even be a paying gig in there somewhere, but until he's out of school and into the field he doesn't really expect to be come a money-printing signature-forging villain ... just yet. No, he uses this to create posters, make detailed blueprints and even can create machinery blow-ups without using a ruler. Yes, he's that good at this!
Multitask +3 There are always a variety of half-finished or in-progress devices and plans sitting around in his dorm as well as his workshop area. Sometimes they can't be finished because he's psionically exhausted, others because the class period is over and he's not allowed to take said toaster-howitzer to his room for the weekend. He always remembers where he left off, and can pick up a project even a year later without pausing to wonder what he was doing. While his memory isn't flawless, he does let himself imagine other ways to work on things, halfway through, so sometimes he does dump plans in favor of ripping apart that engine again and starting with a different approach. And then it's lunch time, again...
Hang With Technicians And Hold His Own +3 With his parents having introduced him to a wide variety of people at Black Mesa, and his own seeking-out of mentors and seminars for mechanical engineering and technical writing, he has never felt out of place among 'the grown ups'. Even those with PhDs and plenty of work under their belts, he seamlessly can continue a conversation if someone has been called away, picking up on their intent and ideas with ease. Some older or more stodgy engineers may take offense that 'some kid' is horning in on their project, but there is no denying that he can stroll through a conference filled with theoretical physicists and roboticists and even janitors or microwave repairmen, and always has something to contribute that will be received well |

Don't Dare Interrupt The Engineer +4/-4 with his need to concentrate on larger or complicated items, this concentration is essential and he creates amazing things with it! So if you interrupt him, there will be dire consequences. He is not above throwing the wrench he's using, with painful accuracy and impact, if you interrupt his work. He is rather short-tempered, in this regard, though he will reserve any actual violent outbursts for when he's actively shaping or listening in on something, rather than 'at all times'. He just really needs his time with the machines and leave him to it or suffer his wrath!
Humorous Hunk +4 Wane really does have a good sense of humor and more than that, of timing. He knows he's a lil' guy (he's only 5'2" at 17, and won't be getting much taller) so he's resorted to being a funny dude, rather than a pack of angry size issues. Hey, he figures he can get under that low-rider or through a vent at his size, even with his musculature, way more easily than some 6'1" mass of meat. He enjoys all manner of jokes and wordplay, though he is definitely not a practical prankster - he will go out of his way to keep people safe, why would he ever want to even hint that they could be injured?
Fashionable After A Bath +2 Or even just while standing around sweaty with his sleeves rolled up. Maybe particularly with his sleeves rolled up. Even if he's not conventionally 'handsome', he definitely can dress well and has the right eye for events, doesn't want to show up smelling like grease to a formal dinner, though there is almost always a very slight tang in the air - his aura, according to some who can detect it, is a bit like pure iron in scent. (He... attracts vampires, to be honest, like corn chips in a school hallway attracts the hungry students.) |

Many kids of Black Mesa employees seem to wind up out in SoCal, but most of them attend Carramba High and then 'C-4' the community college befitting of mutants and powered folks, or the Wonder academy if they're touched with magic. But with Fortuna Valora opening up, some are starting to see the benefits of a boarding school that has a high-focus on such things. Though his powers are mainly 'passive', Wane has truly enjoyed his time here, even though the first few weeks were a bit rough. Being away from his home under the Mesa (living in the housing known as Dry Cove on its western side) and out of the dry crisp New Mexico air for basically the first time ever made him question their decision. But once he was presented with his potential classes, instructors, and living arrangements, he simply and truly fell in love with the place.
Doesn't hurt that FVHS is very, very well designed. Imposing, but stylish. Traditional on the outside, extremely high-tech inside. And... it's got lairs. He knows they're lairs, he's very-casually extended his vision and perception to plot out the hidden portions of this massive facility - the parts that aren't shown on any maps of the place, and definitely off limits to all visitors and most students. He does not write home about those places. He wants to, oh how he wants to. But he doesn't want to give his folks the wrong impression - about himself, or the school. He knows that his dad's family was all military, and that Black Mesa itself has an extensive background in government and military research, so they expected the regimented routines and uniforms and whatnot. They probably wouldn't expect the 'war room' down there, nor the missile silo, though he knows that both of those rooms were present on the site before the rest of the ground structures were put up. They're much, much older, he can tell just by the beams and materials they're made from, after all.
While Wane doesn't necessarily like keeping secrets, he's quite capable of it, and with his sense of humor he can distract folks from asking too many questions by putting a spin on their conversation. Of course it's a hidden vehicle bay, you've seen the Ecks Men, right? Wink! No lie, he's helped fix their own helicopters and the landing pads alike. He won't be really going out in the field with the active 'super soldiers' that the facility is helping to mold, but when they come home with broken blades or armor that needs refining, he'll be there with bells on.
