When Maeve wasn't on campus, of course, she was back at home - the lush forests of her own Aerth. In so many ways it was the exact reverse of Twoarth. It had forests and nature everywhere and a tiny spot here and there of civilization. Technology existed and worked, but magic was far stronger and worked more easily, which was more usually the opposite of Twoarth's tech-based society. Maeve spoke a version of English, they called it Common there. But it wasn't her first language. Her own native tongue was quick, quiet, and to the point. She hated it. She loved the sound of Earthly English and all its other languages. She'd had three language classes at Carramba in her first years, they asked her to take something other than that now, just to round out her education. But her abilities stretched into reading as well as pronounciation - so she learned to read with the speed of her cheetah-shaped friends. The reason that Maeve liked to listen to Earthly languages of course was because she could then get dirt on anyone with it. Just hanging out at the local mall was a field day for her list of dark secrets she kept on others. When she came 'home' then, it was to the silence and boredom of the woods. It was a beautiful place, and she always appreciated that. The cool breeze and warm rain, the thick carpet of grass and leaves below her feet. She remembered to remove the big Nike shoes she'd gotten from school, and left them at the portal to Carramba's on-campus dorms. She felt lucky that they had full time mages to make sure that these portals to alternate Earths remained open. When she'd first met Elsie their portal closed when the girl fell asleep, and she took a week to do the spell again. The problem with Twoarth, though, was that everyone thought she was a little kid. She wasn't! She was just a teenager like her friends, but just because she was so ... short... Everyone believed her to be much younger. She couldn't help that she looked like a kid! She didn't act like one! And she used the 'big words' like adults of course. But Maeve Evana of the Maple Boll Court elves, was about 4 feet tall on the outside. When she took her big shoes off, it was closer to 3'10. Now to be fair, there were kids at school, even some professors, who stood shorter than that. But it was for them the same as it was for her, patted on the head for some reward, talked down to, and generally not taken seriously. Maybe that was why she developed her sharp gossip ears, and the angry tongue to put anyone down when they pissed her off? Anyone who'd crossed her in the past either never did so again, and avoided her, or became a bitter enemy. Such was the way of the elfin community in her part of the world, so that was nothing new. Everyone had some enemy, she believed. |
