"Father, they are doing it again," Ameya sighed, pulling her bedroom door open and angrily slamming it behind her. "They know that I am sensitive to this, and yet they continue to --"

"Ameya, Ameya," sighed her father, "I have spoken to their parents repeatedly and they have said they will speak with the children. That is all I can do," he gazed with violet-black eyes at his lovely daughter, "I am sorry."

"Father, you are a god, surely you can do something to make them stop!" Ameya stomped her foot, rolled her own bright black eyes and swished back into her room.

Perhaps it was true, her father was a minor deity - but then these days who wasn't? It'd gotten so that there were so many partial-gods out there, they had to re-do the rules on who was called a true god and who was merely a local deity. Namra Shyama had three grandparents that were deities, but his wife and the mother of Ameya was fully human, so Ameya would never be allowed to call herself a goddess. Her father's sensitivity to nature had carried strongly in her, as well as his grandmother's predeliction to change things...

Ameya, at this time merely twelve years old, felt every little animal that wandered by her. But now... she was becoming a woman, and her ability to sense things had blossomed as well. She was complaining about the boys next door, who would take out their magnifying glasses and burn lines of ants that walked between the stones of their yard. The boys were six, twins, and little demons.

Literally, along side the deities were demons that bred with humans frequently. Their callous nature wasn't exactly encouraged by their parents, who were both partial demons, but it wasn't really stopped either. Ameya threw herself onto her bed, covered her head with two huge pillows, and tried to ignore the agony she felt from the little creatures.

"It is for the best, Ameya," Namra said to his tearful daughter, "It will give you the chance to grow and nutrure your abilities much better than our local school can."

"I do not want to go to this place! It is all the way around the world from here! I have no friends there! They will mock me!" Now thirteen, Ameya had found out her parents plans to send her to Carramba High School in California.

What they hadn't exactly told her was that it wasn't even on their Earth. She would find that out soon enough, and no protest could stop the transport from happening. Once a deal was signed, it was carried out - such was the magic of the worlds. When Ameya had calmed herself, and taken a look at the course schedules that she could choose from she was confused.

"This ... school... teaches fire magic? And - and Quidditch? I thought that was fictional!" Her attitude changed radically from that moment on. She selected a batch of classes, took some tests which materialized onto her desk overnight - they vanished and were replaced by a school-issued ID card and a class schedule for her Freshman year at the school.

Those in hand, along with her bags and a satchel of spices (she loved them, her mother used them in everything and Ameya would hardly feel comfortable eating bland food elsewhere), she bid her parents a cheerful farewell.

Ameya's presence in the school, something she dreaded because everyone knew that California had people who were tan but she was blue... didn't bat an eye. In fact it was she who had to do double-takes quite frequently. Was that a beachball? Or a person? A centaur? There were people from worlds she didn't even know could exist, let alone had long histories and complex societies in them.

But the one thing she did notice right off, was that this world was filled with different gods than hers. The way they looked at it too, she was of enough deific blood to qualify, though she was still a little young for such a title. After the first few days, and her schedule became rote, Ameya started making friends. Everyone was so different - some people could shapeshift and some were mathmatical formulae. Many were just human enough that they could pass if they wore a cap or a jacket, some were like her: she was human, just exotic.

And then, one year after she had begun her studies - two years after her first menstrual cycle... She started changing again. She had attended a dance, she loved dancing, and her friends adored it when she would do some traditional flourishy thing. When suddenly, her outfit wasn't fitting properly any more. Her skirt wrap almost fell from her hips, and her shirt fell flat on her chest.

Her friends all stared openly for the first time at her - she'd become ... a guy? Well, that was great-grandmama's influence certainly. It hadn't affected her relationship with great-grandpapa, why should it affect anything in this generation?

So she bought some extra clothing, and had fun posing in the fashion class one quarter, being draped with every manner of cloth. So it was that Ameya fell in with people who enjoyed her for who she was, warts and all.

Eventually summer break came and she traveled back to her home world, just in time for the heaviest rains on record. But by now, Ameya had learned to control certain amounts of her sensing ability and wasn't entirely freaked out every time a sparrow fell from its nest or a roach was accidentally trodden on by an ox.

Her Sophomore year information packet came (how it did so was still a mystery to her) and there were some intriguing classes available. She decided to go ahead and apply for the Dragonry classes, who wouldn't want to meet those beautiful creatures up close? She sensed from them so much more than merely being an animal, she could not control them at all - which she could and was getting better at, with normal creatures.

Some of her friends met up with her when she got back to Twoarth, and one or two of them managed to get little pets while they were on vacations. "We saved a couple things for you," said one girl, and presented Ameya with a miniscule egg. <- yes, that's the egg.

Cradling it in her hands, Ameya felt a tiny life within. Soon it hatched, and out came a slithering creature no bigger than half her finger. But it wasn't long, perhaps a week, before it turned into something entirely different! It was growing bigger by the day, into a kind of wormy catterpillar.

While the Belka was growing, her other friend Matteo had gone off to Zekira for a summer exchange program, and came back with a group of pups from a Ferilon breeder. "This one's trained pretty well, but he'll still chew your pillows if you let him. I'm sure you'll know how to deal with him," he laughed, and held up a squirmy cub.

It would grow more slowly than the Belka, naturally, and had to be taught not to eat the chrysalis that the crawlie stage had built around itself...

Ameya named the Ferilon Chulmun, a loose Korean translation of 'striped'. One morning Chulmun was making excited noises and staring intently at the dresser (where he couldn't quite reach, and he hadn't gained his flight feathers just yet). Ameya lept from her bed and made a cooing noise - there was a creamy-colored tiny dragon, a Belka in its adult stage!

She picked up the little legless flitter and it hooked its tail around her wrist, it was barely bigger than her two hands outstretched. She dubbed this Belka, Praline - for it was certainly more into the sweets than her spice rack. Armed with two pets of her own now, Ameya knew that her place would be at the side of either many more pets - or many more dragons...

Thus, back at Carramba for her second year of instruction, Ameya was asked to attend a hatching - possibly to sponsor a dragon! Mirus was the location chosen for her, it was probably not random but she wasn't sure where some of the kids in the class were going. But what she did know was that whatever happened from here on out, she'd be one with the animals.

Just don't let any of them make a loud noise and change her to him, right?

It wasn't going to be a problem, Ameya realized. The dragon which came to her was stunning: also a hermaphrodite (well, 'also' wasn't really the right word) but peaceful and aware. Bright copper with faint markings on hir skin, and those bright green markings! The deity-ette hugged Sy'onaat warmly.

"I am so looking foward to bringing you home, we'll have a lot of fun at school too."

"Will I be allowed to attend classes?" Hi said, and Ameya tilted her head. The dragon was undergoing an interesting change - hi was becoming humanoid.

"Well I certainly hope so!" Ameya laughed.
