Aperture Science |
The first investments that Keenan Lane worked on involved creating a new firm dedicated to, well, 'science'. Cave Johnson frequently had to be reined in since many of his 'scientific' ideas were absolutely bat-shit crazy at best, and world-damaging at worst. Aperture as it was known in the late 60s through the mid-80s had been in a decline but was bought out by Armacham Technologies, and many of Aperture's experiments were rebranded if they were useful, destroyed or forgotten if not. A founding portion of the new Humanity of the world in which Repurposed takes place, comes from the genetics gathered during an event called Bring Your Daughter To Work Day. Hundreds of employees did exactly that - daughters and sons alike - and all of those children had plentiful blood, skin, hair and spit samples taken, along with them being put through a rediculously rigorous 'test' phase (which nearly killed several participants, which was why Armacham nixed the idea of ever having another one). The genetics found in those employees were what made up the 'ELLs' - "expendable labor lifeforms" - cloned girls who were trained for repairs, construction, upkeep, general labor and occasionally more personal ventures such as food service and stress relief. The genes also were used in the formation of several of the Origin students, and kept in use later by Melissa Larrabie and her compulsive creation of people. Aperture's main claim to fame, however, comes in the form of a brilliantly designed facility - the Enrichment Center. Though some parts of this cross over in the Armacham page, several important bits are found here, notably, GLADOS. [In Portal, it's GLaDOS: Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System; in Repurposed, note very well that it is GLADOS: Genetic Latency Aggression Deterrence / Observation System.] This artificial intelligence had been built into the entire facility and could control portions of it remotely, as well as being able to see, hear and otherwise detect what was going on in almost all of it. The Center itself was built around GLADOS, with a massive coolant pit - once used in that experimental 'deep earth power sourcing' but now with huge pipelines circulating coolant, below her. Myriad rooms could be moved on tracks and daisy-wheel arrangements, to reconfigure within the structure. GLADOS was also used to watch over the primary inhabitant, Alma Wade. Unfortunately, when Alma left her mark on the place (in the form of a huge crater where the exterior power plant used to be) she Vortally altered GLADOS and caused the AI to turn on the children left alive inside. Over 900 employees perished not just in the initial blast, but as GLADOS unleashed neurotoxins through the airvents. Only the children and a very few adults survived. |
The Portal Testing Hall - complete with a cube, button, dispenser, and a Panel! The ELLs, notably among them a young girl named Chell, became quite adept at navigating the facility using their hand held portal devices. You can too. |
![]() Anyone who has played Portal should honestly recognize this room... GLADOS herself, complete with toxin generators, a 'potato' brain, the emergency intelligence incinerator, and a portal gun. In Repurposed, GLADOS is taken out by a group of extremely brave, extremely frightened 10 year olds. GLADOS dares you to do better. Observation Room - To the left there is a small, mainly inaccessable room which would be used to observe test subjects along their route. There are hidden items in that room, and it is only reachable by (of course) teleportation. The 'exit' of the chamber is also found there, on the east wall (the circular plate representing the round doors of Portal). |
![]() Alma Wade's Vault - One very scary portion of the Enrichment Center was Alma's Vault, a gigantic cube isolated off to the eastern portion of the EC. It had its own power supply, but also was maintained by GLADOS whenever Alma started to get bored. From the time she was 8 years old, until she escaped at 26, Alma lived within that massive chamber. Since it had walls that could reconfigure and an AI designed to keep her from damaging too much otherwise, Alma never really knew life outside at all. That's not to say she didn't get out. Alma, like Lane, was a teleporter. Her methods might have differed from his, but the end result was that at times, Alma could be seen stalking the halls of the Enrichment Center looking for prey. That could come in the form of a stray visitor, an ELL, a child, or a scientist - she didn't care. Cannibalistic and terrifying, Alma simply scared the crap out of everyone, including her father, Harlan. However, she still was used in creating not only Geoffrey and Paxton Fettel, but a small number of other Origin children - though she only gave birth to those two. Alma's Vault, here in the Convocation base anyway, has three exits. To the north, a "Vortal Doorway" that exists bridging Black Mesa and this area. To the east, "Alma's Back Door" to Paxton's Sanctuary. And to the west, the physical entrance to the Enrichment Center's 'innocuous alleyway'. |
The Enrichment Center is detailed in the Armacham section. |
