Name: Falk Makepiece Gender/Preference: Male, he/him, gay Age/DOB: 28/non-plague era AU Faction: Craftsmen and Shopkeepers, Marked or Magical Family: Unknown, however spent 5 years in a Pandyssian city learning his craft and has since been entrusted with his Master's son see below Height/Build: 5'11" / Slender and wiry, doesn't seem athletic but is not left behind Hair: dark brown, wavy, curls in humid weather, and is often kept quite long and tied back in a tail Eyes: golden brown, seen as an unusual color by most; often behind custom obsidian shaded glasses* Appearance: creamy skin that tans down to a rich shade, no freckles or moles visible; he has long, strong and precise fingers, and also if anyone cares to notice, his toes are also quite long and agile; he is handsome but only has eyes for a very few people, usually men, and he uses his charming smile to gain patrons and customers, not for romance. Has a quiet, almost whispery voice, so if he is suddenly heard over a crowd it is because he means it. Though he is clearly known to be a tidy workman with sharply cut clothing bearing a vest with pockets for tools, he often prefers to be down to barely trousers, a remnant of his extended stay on Pandyssia where the weather is much warmer

Skills and Occupation: Glass work, of all sorts. From selection of mineral and inclusions, their preparation, building and working with the forge, kiln, and other tools to heat the minerals. He is extremely good with this and has tried his hand at pottery and sculpture, as well as tinkering with metals, and only those metals have really kept his fancy for long. He has a good idea of the workings of the eye, and how vision differs from human to animal to insect. His skills with anatomy and structures of vision didn't come from the Natural Philosophy academy, since there are actual medical colleges available in Serkonos (much more advanced than one might find elsewhere, in this and dentistry in particular), but he also has a good idea about how skin and diet may also affect vision. Mainly he makes prescription glasses, after analyzing a person's vision and eyes. He has been known to make artificial eyes, as well as glasses or goggles, and he wonders... what if he made an artificial eye using a combination of that Void Stone and a whale-bone polished up to a shine? Hm.... Also he has a very strong background in 'listening to Pandyssian Culture', so he knows who to speak with in a port visit, where on the map he really is, and various cultural differences between inland and coastal Pandyssia. He learned how to care for his foster-child's hair and skin properly, from Du Len's mother and father. He studies ancient sites and comes home with various collectable items to sell in the Isles or put in the hands of private collections. Knows how to discern a magically-enchanted item from one which is cursed, appraises goods and gear, and knows how to pack for very long journeys. Also he has a good arrangement with the tax collectors, guards, and such locally around his shop, to make sure that it is secure. Residence: Has a comfortable suite of rooms above his Exquisite Lenses shop, which is a 3 story plus Basement location in the Northern Campo Seta district, set upon a hill with a very nice view of the Albarca Baths and numerous shops and homes, and having a foot entry from the streert level on the eastern corner of the building. He owns the entire building, but it does directly connect with three others as shown below, though the north and east structures are lower, and the western one has had its arched doorway bricked over. They can all be accessed through tunnels in the basement. He and Du Len reside at the top under the rooftop greenhouse and with a fantastic view of both sunrise and sunset. He's been known to have a visitor now and again for those views, but few 'parties'. The structure can be exited from second and middle story balconies in emergencies.
Notable Possessions: Glasses made of 'obsidian' found near ancient ritual sites on Pandyssia are enchanted and allow him to see specific things when needed. He did not enchant this obsidian, it came that way, as it was chipped from the volcanic residue near the Pit of Reverence and had always been magically charged. He can use more of it, he's got a fair number of blocks and sheets of such material, along with the much more exotic and hidden-in-the-basement Void Stone chipped directly from the Pit itself. He knows he can't use that stuff for customers, unless someone that he implicitly trusts tells him to use it, and any of that will come with the sternest of warnings to not betray where they got it from. He has a pair of telescopes on the roof of the building that he created himself, which get a good amount of use by Du Len. He has all of the tools and items from Abda's glassworks center, once he made sure that the local city Ked Len remained in would have access to enough goods to invest in another glass maker at some point. Since Ked Len insisted he keep them, he's made sure to preserve every screw, tool, and fitting to the exacting standards that Abda taught him. |

| Magical Preferences or Abilities: Though he is not Marked, he has always been somewhat favored by the Outsider in this dimension. Particularly because he has visited those ancient sites, which the Outsider cannot really work through - they're already spoken for, there are still remnants of older gods and ancient magic there that even Leviathan (in any dimension's Void) cannot work. Respectful, but firm, when the Outsider came to them both in dreams to announced that Du Len would be a very good user of magic should he receive his Mark. With the young boy's welfare of primary concern, however, Falk insisted that he wait if it was to be done at all, because 'he's only a child, a black boy often enough assumed to be a slave, from distant 'savage' Pandyssia' - any one of those things would give reason to pause, but all of them together meant that the potential for disaster far outweighed any benefits that a 7 or 8 year old Du Len would have gained from bearing the Mark. Falk can say he senses and is able to utilize enchanted objects, as well as find specific tools to imprint sigils and ancient runes with potential magic. His glasses are such an item, made for him by Abda as a parting gift when he'd finished his studies with her. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Personality: Attentive, curious but wary, extremely canny. He is very much a measure-twice type, given he works not only with sharp glass, hot forges and kilns, molten metals, and extremely small tools, he touches your eyes with them... Only the right tools! He is remarkably respectful and genuine toward the Pandyssian people overall, knowing there are still tribes and cultures deep in the continent that would easily spear him through. Being able to not only work directly with a master craftswoman like Abda Kuyate, but live among her family and community for a good chunk of his teenage life gave him a perspective that most folk from the Isles (read, 'most white folk') can never know. Not only that, he was able to win over the hearts and gain the respect of their religious leaders, able to sense and commune with ancient spirits and powerful magic while there. He knows that any of this cannot really be either reproduced in the Isles or spoken about particularly loudly. He actively defends his young charge - even long after Du Len is not 'young' - when arrogant fools continue to make assumptions about the free status of his assistant at the shop. Likes and Dislikes: He loves spicy food, and thinks that the Isles are laughably apt to believe Karnaca's spicy dishes are anywhere close to the beautiful complex heat of Pandyssian food! Has a soft spot for star gazing with Du Len, and listening to his retelling of stories - as well as telling the youth those of the northern Isles, as they are notably different star patterns from his home city. He enjoys travel, and will pick up and just hike around a place knowing how to keep a pace or make sure to carry enough gear. Fears or Interruptions: That his precious charge, his partner in business, and the son of his own craft master, will be harmed by the Abbey or come to be injured through some fault of his own. Falk is very nearly overprotective of the young lad, but knows that he can handle himself. He knows. ... he knoooows. But still worries. He also wonders if and when any of the witch-hunters will come for his shop - given his selection of oddities and exotic glass, 'aren't some of those things heretical' well yeah they are but he didn't know that when he bought them in Pandyssia right? Right? |
