Bond: Khilseith, Impression
Meeting Notes: What would father think, what would he do? That kept going through Khilseith's mind the whole evening, and it was a worry that his friends knew plagued his mind. And they wished it would stop. They told him as much, too, their influence over Khilseith had grown strong - at least, 'according to his father'.

Was it true? Was it so bad, though? They'd managed to bolster his mood enough to even ask permission to attend this amazing ball, and now that he was here, he felt freer and more like himself than he ever had. They'd split away and hunted up a table and some food in the meantime, as Khilseith continued to wander on the main floor. This event was unlike anything he'd ever dreamed of, and unexpected things would most certainly happen.

Doesn't that mean they're expected things? A voice asked him.

"Well it's more a turn of phrase," he replied, and only a moment later did he realized that it wasn't a person gathered at the edge of the dance floor, it was ... a dragon, sitting beside him in a polite manner, head tilted watching the dancing beyond.

Your father will not be expecting me, I can't wait to meet him. There was such an air of impish glee about that simple statement, Khilseith's eyes blinked rapidly - how did this little dragon know about... Of course I know, I'm your dragon, you're my chosen.

He tried to turn this on its side, "Then ... then why don't I know about you?"

I'm postitive you do. I just hatched recently, how could I have anything to know about beyond my name?

"Haiante," he breathed, he did know. "And you're going to be a handful aren't you?"

I will make every effort in the world to be just that, my one.

Parents: Donor Clutch Calietosth + Dairruinth
Bond: Zolgrinas, Voluntary Companionship
Meeting Notes: He was big, clad all in black, but he didn't hold himself like any of the locals. He wasn't a bodyguard for someone in the delegation on the balcony talking shop, nor a sentry to stand watch at the entry to the other portions of the venue. No, those things were painfully obvious by the fact that he was a demon, just-not-human-looking enough that no one would mistake him for a local. But also hardly out of the norm for this party. That fact alone brought Zolgrinas a little bit of boldness, a touch of confidence in something other than his battle prowess.

He spotted several people that matched him in size and musculature - including at least one that was most definitely a host of the event - he didn't feel all that out of place among what seemed to be a largely-human gathering. That thought fluttered around and faded as he got closer looks at things, some of which... fluttered around his head before giggling and flying up to dance with other fey or draconic people in the rafters above.

As several nests of dragons came through the place, he watched eagerly. Dragons were quite different here, weren't they? From one another, as well as anything found on his own home. Idly he flipped through the little pamphlet that one of the greeters had handed him, wondered what was in that goodie bag (smelled like something sweet, and possibly something liquid?). He found himself looking over the last page with descriptions and images, grunted to himself. "Pointy bits, might keep some away."

"Might interest others," someone commented.

Without looking up, he gave a sideways nod, "perhaps, army's always looking for new ways to spear things through."

"You are not looking for that," that same someone said, and suddenly Zolgrinas realized 'someone' was looking right over his shoulder, peering with some difficulty at the booklet he had on the table. "You are looking for some peace, aren't you? But sometimes peace has a cost."

A sharp dragon face, not like the ones at the end of the book, more like ones toward the front... Blinked and finally rested their chin on his shoulder. "I might help you pay that cost, if you want. I might not be big enough for you to ride," it glanced away at what appeared to be its 'parent' clutch - who were quite a bit bigger than this little hatchling with the black backed checkerboard wings. "But I can already fly, and I think I can learn how to do some magic. I liked listening to our not-father's spellcasting lessons. I won't be very good at it? But maybe it will be enough."

A strange wave of confidence and ... and what? What was the mood he'd discovered? It had been so long since there were things other than dread, anger, and exhaustion in his life. Anticipation? Optimism? It came through him like a storm, little wisps at first and then a gale of emotion. It was not a truly magical bond or an impression, like some he'd read in that book, but it was a true pairing indeed. Dewcada finally introduced themselves formally and might be the tipping point for the demon's escape from his endless toil.

Bond: Chloe Cogwright, Voluntary Companionship
Meeting Notes: She did truly feel that her creator would have enjoyed himself here at this Ball. Though normally she wouldn't express or perhaps even process the emotions around herself, there was something here - a spark, or perhaps a complete lightning storm of it - that brought her soul's memories just a tiny bit closer to the surface. Not necessarily the memories themselves, but the feeling of being... more complete? Less of a construct and more of a person. That was silly of course, she was already a person according to her creator. And also, oddly, according to everyone around her at this big party.

While she made note of a few who stayed clear of her for whatever reason, if anyone balked at her appearance or the air of alchemical magic around herself, they didn't make it a big deal. Chloe heard the variety of tongues being spoken, and yet without training even she understood them all without having to strain. There was certainly magic at work here! So as more of an experiement than anything else, she decided to wander around the place and observe behaviors. One thing she distinctly noted at this place was that inebriation and celebration as a backdrop definitely brought out the more raucous nature of those people...

She lingered around some of the tables where discussion of how the varied pairs of dragons had been spliced together or aided a little here and there, that kind of science was quite fascinating! As well, the magic that was used to put the whole area into one seamless undersea shelter? Amazing, and she was such a seamless construct herself.

There was that one moment, though, that she spotted a strange creature, not an elf, not a goblin or other such thing, but brown skinned with a third arm poking improbably out of its chest, and a head that was quite heavy with eyes. It was slowly sweeping the hall near where a number of the magical-types arrived, keeping their muddy foot prints from marring the white and black marble farther into the chambers. She needed to remember that now... she lacked her own creator, and beyond herself, only he knew how to perform the maintenance that she might need should any harm come to her form. Even a slow wear and tear, from the possible decades of functionality, that would mean she would slowly lose cohesion.

What would happen if the stone... In a markedly human gesture she shook her head quickly as if to clear those thoughts from it.

I would pick it up and help you put it back.

Could it be said that she 'heard' a voice in her mind? Parts of her tried to start analyzing how that could even be possible, given what she was, but then the rest of her, something old but also something quite unique, perked up and listened. "Would you? How would you know how to do it?" She asked, and finally spotted the source of that voice. It was a sleek dragon with a little bow-tie and a white mask, it was quite dapper.

I just know these things? You're a little different than the air conditioner or the music boxes.

"I should hope so!" Chloe actually found herself surprised, with a laugh. How foreign, how odd. "Who are you, little one? And would you like to be my assistant?"

With that the dragonet nodded rapidly. I am Elk, it will be my pleasure!

Bond: Vartian, Voluntary Bond
Meeting Notes: There was no amount of planning that could have prepared Vartian for this place, so - like many times with his sibling and their friend - he just went with whatever was going on. The best laid plans could easily be dashed, but at the same time they could very quickly turn to a windfall. And this time, that definitely was the case. While his twin brother was off at the casino, and Khi already being shown around the floor with a lovely dragon himself, Vartian breathed a brief sigh of relief.

It was brief because he already knew what was in store. He'd done the math, so to speak. By volume this place was packed with potential dragons to --

"Am I high volume enough? I'm not chunky like my sibling over there," the dark grey spoke and nodded toward an admittedly-thick kitten-like dragonet. "I can fit through small places," it added with what appeared to be a grin. "Unlike some."

The image that the dragonet provided was so much like ones he'd seen his twin get into - rump stuck out of a small window in a wall, legs kicking... This little dragon wouldn't be larger than most house cats, at that. But could fly, and that would be amazing to get better information... "Yarukeba?" Vartian spoke the name, not exactly sure. But the dragonet with the checkered wings and shiny hide gave a positive nod and lept into his arms.

That is me, I'll help you get your friends in and out of trouble!

Parents: Donor Clutch Laeurath + Juth
Bond: Tanyl, Impression
Meeting Notes: There were lords and ladies, drunkards and dancers, gamblers and ghosts here. So many could be seen laughing and chatting or clumped up on the balconies, sitting along low benches with coffee or tea. Tanyl did wonder how any of his many sisters would have responded. Likely entranced by the music, swooning at the slightest hint of a flirt.

Remembering his sister's admonition, however, perhaps they weren't bad things. Eventually, as they all grew up and matured, he would no longer be their replacement-father-figure. He watched as several gorgeous clutches of dragons were shown off, but was very distracted. Odd - he saw a group of young teens excitedly gathered around an intimidating man, obviously not their sire. He encouraged them, and... even laughed when one of them punched his friend.

Would he have stopped that interaction? Was that what this odd vampiric man should have done?

Why do you keep second guessing yourself? No harm was done.

The hair on the backs of his arms and neck rose, "who... said that?"

I did, your Yanlaeju. My siblings are all meant to be with others, I would not stop them... Why would you prevent your siblings from their intended?

He glanced down, as a sparklingly white dragonet sat staring up at him. Not tiny, but definitely not the full sized type, but wise. Definitely wiser than a hatchling should be.

So are your siblings, the dragonet asserted. But they will always need their big brother, you know. I will always miss my not-family, it lifted its checkerboarded wing, but I will be all right with you. And you will be all right with me!

He pursed his lips together and had to take a deep breath. "I ... I know you're right, but it has been hard sometimes."

The dragonet nuzzled into his hand, I can help you remember to give the space they need. And you won't be alone either.

Parents: Donor Clutch Sheng Stac'ver + Vassago Thain
Bond: Arlayna, voluntary companionship
Meeting Notes: She'd been at this party for ever, and while some folks might have let it creep into their spirit as a happy event, Arlayna just kept scooting around the venue trying to avoid... well, everything. Everyone, more accurately. She could spot this or that person in this crowd but preferred to be spotting weeds in the garden. Idly she swished her spoon around in the stew she'd picked up from the dinner menu, thinking about weeds and people and wondering if that was a bad thing in the eyes of the gods.

It's fine if you don't like people, they get in the way.

Arlayna's motion stopped abruptly, leaving the chunk of cabbage floating in the thick liquid to bob a little.

It's just me, I am Ransheva. I think I'd like to live on that 'farm' thing, do you have pests? If you like digging at weeds, I would enjoy snapping at rats... And maybe unwanted visitors!

Arlayna gazed away from the table and to her side, where a smallish (not small) hatchling stood wobbly on their hind legs, balancing with a strong tail. That tail split into two at the end, tipped with scary looking stingers, and framed by the bold black and white checkerboards of the event's trademark. The rest of the dragon was quite dark, richly coal-black, and those wings! Also patterned.

"How would you fit in... well," she chuckled mostly to herself, "I'm sure you will fit in the carrage shelter. Not that I'd ever ask you to pull a plough or cart!"

Meeting Notes: I think we should split up and search, the dragon with the darker hide suggested. Their companion with equally bold checkerboard markings nodded in agreement, silently.

They had not 'broken shell' so much as 'rolled into one another' while still confined to their pseudo-artificial shells, surrounded as they were by more than two dozen small and large orbs. Even in their youngest moments, before hatching, they knew they'd be together, so they might as well make it a good partnership.

The lighter of the pair was usually the quiet one who did the nimble work, but was also pretty clever on their own terms - they realized they could break out together, while the darker one took initiative and put plans into action that involved more muscle. All that in the span of a few hours at this bizarre party... Their donor parents have watched this with amused interest.

They'd spent most of their earliest post-hatching moments preening each other and making sure there were no icky bits anywhere, no sharp shell fragments around to step on and make an unsightly mess. There had been a couple of them that slipped and cut themselves, healing quickly but remembering the lesson they'd just learned. And as telepaths might be, those youngest hatchlings shared that pain with the rest.

It was the lighter of this pair that watched the hunters come and go from the weird portals and cavern entrances that led to worlds very far distant. Krasheva by name, sure of themselves and sure that something else was out there too. But it was the darker Cyrsheva that realized there was actually an entire different portion of their 'hatching party' chambers out there! That was where they needed to be!

The 'bipedal' part of the Ball was so weird to them. They'd only been awake and about for a 'day' or so, and had spent all of that time with other dragons. Magical dragons, burly and strong ones, speedy and sleek ones, pretty and flighty ones. So now, on this other side, they were still near lots of dragons, due to many of the hatchlings heading out to seek their humanoid partners. But it was by far populated by 'people'.

We will be bigger than many of these, Krasheva bespoke their sibling.

But much smaller than our own, Cyrsheva replied from across the hall, watching as one of those big-sibs approached their own new friend.

Bigger isn't necessarily better, Krasheva reminded them. I - may have...

Found one?

The one!

They'd caught a whiff, apparently some dragons could 'smell' their one, others 'detected' with other senses. It was mixed with a lot of other smells they didn't know the names of. Gunpowder, ozone, alcohol, weed. It was to a darker hall and a tucked-away room they went. Darker, but not quieter. A few voices broke out in laughter, congratulatory noises, after crashing glass and a thud.

"Maybe a mini-fridge," someone said, "but you'd want it warmed up, right? Later?"

"I... don't know what that is," a man said, gruffly, but he'd been the one to be congratulated - someone else had retrieved the axe he'd just thrown into a pair of tall bottles at the end of a firing range. One person sat nearby pondering with her gaze up into the ceiling, and another held a mug which presumably had been filled with whatever the empty bottles provided earlier.

"A mini-fridge!" It was Mars Walsh excitedly waving that mug around, pointing with it dangling from her thumb and her fingers aimed toward the corner of the room. A white box, with glass on the front, and more of those bottles inside it. "We use them to keep booze but we also use em up in the medical center for preserving blood samples and health kits."

The pair of dragons hadn't yet been noticed, somehow blending in with the dark walls even if they had all that checkerboarding going on. They watched with interest, when this axe-throwing man examined that axe before placing it carefully onto his back in a sling. Perhaps he had been asked to remove it earlier, as it seemed to surprise him that it remained in place, he patted himself down and seemed to be wondering whether any other items he normally wore were now on his person... It was a formal party, axes not needed... But here in the firing range things were a little different.

"I think you may have an unhealthy interest in my ... condition," the man said. But Mars laughed loudly and waved it off.

"Just trying to be helpful, it's a condition I've seen in a few people here and there."

He said nothing more, though he'd still wondered... how had they known about that condition? Magic at work, certainly. Well perhaps it was the fact that the bar in the casino as well as the menu for the event's meals included fresh blood sourced from 'whatever' animals they'd been harvesting for other parts of it.

We know too, a voice in his head spoke.

But we won't tell if you don't want us to.

He didn't startle easily, Kazimir maintained his cautious stance at all times. But he looked around specifically for the sources of those eerily similar mental voices. They came from the obvious pair of dragons, dark and slightly-less-dark, standing on their hind legs and coming - currently - up to his hip at most.

You don't have to be alone so much, said one.

We can make sure you're safe from harm or ... harming them. The other added, but we'd like to see the world with you, too.

"You... both?" Kazimir's eyebrow had gone up.

Of course! One of us will be looking for danger. And the other will make sure it stays away! Even if that means keeping you away from something you value.

"I... don't even know what to think." Kazimir looked at the thick red remnants of the blood in his own mug. "Maybe I'll find a mage to enchant a wine cabinet for my own 'mini-fridge'..."

The dragons seemed to love that thought!

Meeting Notes: There was something that caught the eye of - and perhaps the magical imagination - a specific highly unusual guest at the party. They'd hardly even been there a few minutes when they spotted a little nook, tucked into an arch along one wall. Cushioned seating and little shelves indicated that this was a nook that should be visited and enjoyed!

There were many weird remnants of magic here. But what they saw on looking at the shelves was more than just an echo or a memory. Little packets of stacked paper, paired with small dropper-topped bottles? Intriguing. Images on those papers looked similar to many of the motifs here at the Checkerboard Ball - one might certainly expect a chess piece like them!

Well, to commemorate the occasion, the Reaper curiously took up a stack, discovered there was a little pouch under it to keep the rest. Dropper, paper... Oh! And instructions? To put it on image-down, let a drop moisten it... Oh the magic definitely was working. Overtime, perhaps.

They tucked the rest of it back into its pouch, making sure that the bottle wouldn't come open and that the papers wouldn't fold. After applying this little 'temporary tattoo', Imizael wandered out to the party proper, and enjoyed a tremendous evening!

There were so many people, with so much to say. A fair few of them were bleeding out into different dimensions, just standing there sipping coffee at the one kiosk, and one of them - one of the hosts in fact - stared directly at the Reaper with a strange expression, and then shook his head, smiled, and nodded toward the rest of the ballroom.

For several hours, the pale-skinned collector of souls soaked it all in. Tales of adventure from worlds with conflict, and musical distractions from a variety of groups that culminated in a big gaudy show! As the 'midnight' bell rang out, Imizael would certainly remember this party forever!

I will remember it too, a little voice directly addressed the Reaper. It is where you found me! And I'll be with you to always remember!

The dragon's wings fluttered, though it wasn't able to fly yet. There was a magical connection so strong that led right back to the Reaper's arm - where they'd placed the temporary tattoo. "It was you, then!" And that dragon nodded.

"I can help, can't I?" They asked. "You have a hard job, I think I can make it easier."

"I'm sure that anyone in distress will find you quite pleasant, little one."

"I am Lirastash! And you are my friend!"

Meeting Notes: (see also Mav above)

"You're not twins, no matter how you try and say it," Fenian said, faintly slurred, to the pair of small young dragonets that had decided to hang out with him at their big balcony table. They sat across from him, though if anyone from his group came along they'd need to move, and if one did sit where Bymthol had sat they might notice a few punctured holes in the nice leather seat cover... "I know from twins, y'know."

"Well we are siblings then," that spikey dragon asserted, and their heavily-checkerboarded companion nodded. They took turns eating from a large shallow bowl of cut meats, and while one of them had their nose buried in it, the other would sit staring at the fairy asking him strange questions or making silly assertions.

The other one, the more horse-like dragonet, licked its muzzle clean (they were both reasonably clean eaters, somehow) and said, "you're not exactly like your twin, he wasn't who we wanted to hang out with. Right, Bym?"

Bymthol, up to its cheeks in meat, gave a grunting nod.

Fenian knew that their bond was true, both with each other and with him, as that spiked dragonet's mind met his own. He's boring, well not boring but just not exciting enough!

They switched off who ate at the bowl, the contents rapidly dwindling, and Mav telepathically added, not like you, you suited us better.

Fenian did spot his brother, apparently having a conversation with some other fey person down by the orchestra pit near the Stage. "I hope he'll find someone to come home with," he said earnestly. "He deserves it."

"We are your extra eyes and ears," Bymthol asserted.

"And you might be surprised to find he's already paired up," Mav claimed, though it was hard to say - where was the...? Huh, well, he'd find out later. For now, Fenian wanted to help these two get some more food in their bellies, and grab another plate of kebab, himself! With two extra bellies to feed now (and the hunger pangs, newness-of-it-all, and interesting added sensory overload from them to prove it) he hustled.
